Launch of New Education Resource for Children with a Disability

October 2009     The Positive Education Planning booklet is packed with tips for parents whose children are starting out at school.  Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development Maxine Morand has launched the new guide designed to empower parents of children with a disability when planning their education.

“More than 90 per cent of schools have at least one student with a disability enrolled and it is critical that they are well supported and their families can access information and services relevant to their child’s needs,” Ms Morand said.

“It is important that Victorian families have the information they need about these support services, as well as practical tips on how to set learning goals, how to help at home and how to get involved and stay connected to their child’s education.

“We are working in partnership with the community to support stronger families and this easy-to-read booklet is part of that.”

“Parenthood is a challenging and rewarding experience, particularly for parents of a child with a disability,” Ms Morand said.

The Positive Education Planning booklet includes links to further information and services and real-life case studies from parents.  It will be distributed to all Victorian government schools and copies are also available from the Association for Children with a Disability.
