February 2011 School Education Minister Peter Garrett has invited Australians to have their say about the Government’s National School Chaplaincy Program, releasing a discussion paper about the program and options for its expansion.
The Government has committed $222 million which will ensure the 2,681 schools that currently have a Chaplain have their funding secured until 2014. This commitment will also mean up to 1,000 additional schools are set to benefit from next year.
“The discussion paper seeks the community’s views about how the program may be targeted and expanded including how the program could better support rural, remote and disadvantaged schools,” Mr Garrett said.
“What we want now is for everyone interested in education to have their say about the program, its effectiveness and how the program can be further refined to deliver even more support to students in need. We know there are a wide variety of views around how to best deliver wellbeing services to students, and it is important to make sure they are heard through this process.”
Responses to the Discussion Paper are now invited from all interested parties by 18 March 2011.
